The Donon col
The highest point of the Lower Vosges, a site classified as a historical monument, between nature, history and legend
Between St-Dié-des-Vosges and Saverne, Grandfontaine is located in the Bruche Valley, at the summit of the Donon Pass, more precisely at the foot of the summit of the same name, the major summit of the Vosges massif. In addition to the wild beauty of the landscapes that this kingdom of the fir tree of the Vosges offers, its discovery is surprising for its archeological and historical aspect.
Indeed, visible from far away, its location away from the usual places of occupation at 1009m altitude overlooking the Lower Vosges has always given it a sacred character at the origin of the development of legends and cults magical.
Traces of Celtic and Druid cultures bear witness to this today as well as vestiges of religious ceremonies dating back to the Gallo-Roman period, when the site was dedicated to Mercury. Under Napoleon III, a successful pastiche of an ancient temple crowned the summit. This temple still visible today is waiting for your visit ...
